Slow Computer Got You Down?

Business & Finance

By Mark Carlson

In the last few years the two most common issues facing computer owners are that their computers become slower and slower and/or they can’t get online. This is usually because the system is full of adware and spyware - slowing down the system almost to a crawl. Adware and spyware can be difficult to get rid of at times depending on what has penetrated your hard drive. I use a minimum of four different software tools to eradicate these pests. I generally isolate the operating system and run the software tools to alleviate the adware/spyware. If the system is heavily bogged down with these pests, a more drastic measure must be taken, such as a possible system reload. On a client’s request I can perform a backup of their important data before this is done. Here are some of the most common questions I am asked by my clients.

What is Adware/Spyware?

Adware is software that displays advertisements on your computer. These are ads that inexplicably pop up on your display screen, even if you're not browsing the Internet. Some companies provide "free" software in exchange for advertising on your display. It's how they make their money.

Spyware is software that sends your personal information to a third party without your permission or knowledge. This can include information about Web sites you visit or something more sensitive like your user name and password. Unscrupulous companies often use this data to send you unsolicited targeted advertisements.

Can more than one computer connect online at one household without costing more or paying more money to the ISP (Internet Service provider)?

Yes, you may have many other computers, laptops, desktops or a combination of both that may access the internet by use of a router or wireless router in your home. A router is a hardware device that connects your cable/DSL modem and your PC and enables the user to connect multiple computers with one internet connection. It not only connects online but shares files, printers and storage devices between computers; it can be very useful.

How long does it generally take to fix computers?

If your system is infected severely and will take a considerable amount of time to clean.  It usually takes an average of 4 hours to clean a system. A good technician will use up to five software tools to rid system of any infections found.

What is the best way to protect my computer and personal data?

The best way is to choose an Anti Virus solution of your choice. I prefer Norton Internet Security though all internet security programs may be confusing at first until you know how they operate. Also install at least 3 Anti Spyware/Adware programs. Keep in mind that you must keep your anti virus software up to date and also update and run your Spyware/Adware programs on a regular basis. This is the best way to ward off intruders and be as safe as possible. It is a never- ending battle with all the new viruses, adware and spyware that float around out there.

How much RAM (system memory) should my system have?

You should have as much ram as you can afford. At least talk to someone like me about what programs you use and how you use them, if there is more than one program open at a time and if you multitask between many programs. These are questions that need to be answered to determine how much RAM may be needed.
