The focus of Clinical Research in the past has been to find a cure for a disease or to control the symptoms caused by a particular disease. Today, the focus of the pharmaceutical companies and the research industry has changed. Now, in addition to finding cures and treating symptoms of disease, there is a great emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention. When we think back to our parent’s generation, do you ever remember overhearing discussions about cholesterol levels and blood pressure? Did anyone know what their “Cardiac Risk Factors” were? Of course not! Today, we have all become savvy consumers regarding our health. We are smart about choosing low cholesterol foods, watching our weight to avoid diabetes and adding exercise to our daily lives. Baby Boomers are coming of age and want to live a good long time! The demand for new products and information to preserve health has become a big business. So, what’s the SKINNY on research today? Read on!
Weight Loss Trials - The long term effects of obesity in this country are well known. Obesity can lead to heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and diabetes. Infinity Medical Research is involved in conducting research trials to promote weight loss and combat obesity. The goal of our research is to promote a healthy lifestyle. We want our patients to make good dietary changes that will be a life long commitment. All of our patients that are involved in weight loss trials are counseled by a nutritionist/dietitian at almost every office visit. In addition, they are given a Pedometer and a prescribed exercise program to enhance their weight loss. Whether or not the patient receives the “active” weight loss drug or a placebo “sugar pill”, they are successful because they have learned healthy habits.
Diabetes Trials - The latest change in drug development for diabetes is to preserve the pancreas. The pancreas is the organ that secretes insulin. The cells that secrete insulin are called beta cells. Eventually, beta cells no longer secrete insulin and that patient must start injecting insulin. New research is being conducted at Infinity Medical Research with a drug that “saves or preserves” the beta cells.
