Lullabies for Your Little One

Creative Services

By Kate Grana

Lullabies are the soothers of the music world. They take us to a dreamland of peaceful slumbering, rocking us to sleep on their slow, quiet notes. Perhaps you remember hearing, as a child, “Rock-a-bye-baby”, “Sweet and Low” or “Tura-Lura-Lura” and were lucky enough to have them sung by a parent or relative as you slipped off to sleep. But while lullabies have been around for centuries, truly new ones haven’t been recorded…until now.

As a singer, songwriter and musician, I’m always looking for ways to bring music to even the youngest of ears. Lullabies seemed the perfect place to share my love of music and children and add a modern flair to what has, traditionally, been very staid – after all, even Mother Goose stories have been updated since they were first written!

“Off to Sleep I Go” is my contribution to new parents and babies everywhere. The songs begin by getting Baby ready to go “off to sleep” with the title song that encourages her to stretch and yawn and then lay down, ready to relax. “When at Night I Go to Sleep” comforts Baby with images of guardian angels protecting him while he sleeps, reducing his innate fear of the dark. Each of the songs on the CD encourages babies off to sleep with beautiful, comforting music surrounding and enveloping them, conveying that they are safe, protected and deeply loved.

Some of the songs have the additional bonus of baby gurgles and laughter along with water and even Dolphin squeals recorded into the background! These added sounds both delight and amuse listeners young and old. All of the songs are accompanied by a music box like instrument that is very soothing to the ear. My own nephews have been lulled to sleep with great success, and I’ve had lots of fun with those “field tests”!

Lullabies are beautiful music that last long beyond the newborn years, and the memories of these songs can rekindle feelings of safety, peace and love, even in older age. Some baby gifts are used and then discarded; the gift of music can last a lifetime. If you know expectant parents, or even parents of toddlers, consider gifting them with the “Off to Sleep I Go” CD.
