The South Shore’s MRI Specialists

Health & Wellness

By Gordon K. Kanzer, M.D.

SeaCoast Advanced Diagnostic Imaging is a free standing imaging center located one half mile off RT 3, exit 2, in South Plymouth. My name is Gordon K. Kanzer, M.D., and I am the Medical Director and on site Radiologist for SeaCoast Imaging.  I am fellowship trained in Magnetic Resonance Imaging and was one of the first to bring MRI services to Cape Cod.  Our 1.5T high field Large Bore MRI system offers an ideal solution for the claustrophobic patient, making the MRI experience comfortable and stress free. I have compiled the following answers to frequently asked questions.  If you are interested in learning more about SeaCoast Imaging or MRI, please visit our website www.SeaCoastImaging.com.

What is an MRI?

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging.  Using magnets and radio waves, information regarding a part of the body is fed into computers to produce exquisite images that enable us to diagnose abnormalities and disease processes.

Why would I need one?

There are many reasons for which your doctor would order an MRI from problems of bones and joints to neck and back pain to headaches.  With MRI, we literally can image any part of the body from head to toe.

What is the difference between a CAT scan and an MRI?

A CAT scan uses x-rays to image parts of the body and MRI does not.  Both produce images using computers.  There are some applications better suited for CAT scan such as imaging of lungs, the sinuses or bone factures.  CAT scan is also better for general survey of the body for abnormalities such as with abdominal pain, whereas MRI is better suited to focus on a particular part of the body.

Does it hurt?

Except for some applications requiring the intravenous administration of contrast or IV dye that require an injection into an arm vein, an MRI is painless.  SeaCoast Imaging only hires highly qualified, compassionate technologists to help your MRI experience be the best it can be.  We want you to feel comfortable and at ease the entire time you are visiting us.

How long does an MRI take to complete?

On the average, an MRI takes 20 to 30 minutes.  The technologists at SeaCoast Imaging will offer you headphones with music to diminish the thumping noises that are heard during an MRI examination.  Our technologists are always in contact with you during your scan, available to answer any questions you may have.

Will I be claustrophobic?

Claustrophobia is a problem with the older MRI scanners.  A new state-of-art MRI scanner, like the Siemens 1.5 T Magnetom Espree at SeaCoast Advanced Diagnostic Imaging, has the largest opening in the industry allowing for plenty of fresh air to circulate around the patient.  When we image the lower back, knee, ankle and foot, the patient’s head is out of the MRI scanner.  If needed, we also have mirror glasses that allow patients to see their significant other during the entire examination.

How do I get results?

The interpreting radiologist generates a report that is faxed to your doctor’s office.  Your doctor will discuss the results with you.  As the onsite radiologist, I am also available to discuss your case with your doctor as needed.  SeaCoast Imaging also offers an option that can allow your physician the ability to view your images and reports online.

Will my insurance cover an MRI?

Most insurance plans cover MRI.  Many require pre-certification before the scan can be performed.  Your insurance company can tell you if your MRI is covered and if there is any deductible.

How do I make an appointment?

Your physician will send an order for your MRI once he or she has decided that an MRI is necessary to diagnose your condition.  You do have a choice as to where you MRI is performed.  SeaCoast Advanced Diagnostic Imaging accepts all insurance plans.  You can give us a call at (508) 888-2270 to book your appointment at your convenience.  We offer same day or next day appointments for any patient and we have extended hours to accommodate your busy schedule.
