“I hate these lines around my mouth!” This is one of the most frequent complaints to bring a woman into my Aesthetic practice. You look in the mirror and they are the first undeniable reminder that day by day, time marches on and you are growing older. You certainly are not alone and we understand how important this is to you (even if your husband reassures you, “Honey, you look fine!”.
To solve vertical lip lines, we need to study a woman’s mouth. Is it premature aging, volume loss, sun damage or overuse? Hyper dynamic contraction of the circular muscles of the mouth create a constant pucker resulting in the “Smoker’s Lines”. That’s an awful label – what if you’re a nonsmoker and you get stuck with that name tag?
I have seen people who, when they speak, draw their mouth into a tight “O” and hold it. Or sometimes, a person with mild asthma “purses” their lips. For hyper dynamic lip muscles, we think of the “off-label” use of a few units of Botox® - 4 small injections for less than $150 and a great improvement can occur. There are actually about a dozen advanced injection techniques that can be performed with Botox® to relax and rebalance hyper dynamic facial muscles that occur as we age, with excellent results.
Collagen fibers within the skin dermis layer break down from over exposure to the sun as well as hormone loss with aging. We all accumulate exposure to the sun over time, and certainly some sun is necessary for us to convert active Vitamin D3. Excessive sun exposure does result in accelerated collagen breakdown. For that we can offer Laser Wrinkle Reduction, a series of 4 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart to stimulate new collagen growth and repair. Before and after examples can be viewed in my office or explore my website, www.Suite1A.net.
Wrinkle Reduction therapy can also be used for the fine permanent wrinkling that can be seen lateral to each eye area, especially when combined with a quality prescription skin care system made by Obagi®, e.g., CRx or Nuderm with Tretinoin to stimulate healthy skin turnover.
Lip Fillers are an exciting and excellent choice for rejuvenation of volume depleted aging lips. Look at any teenage girl and you will certainly be envious of her full, plump, rosy lips! I apologize if I have teased you, but plump and full is the desired result of lip filler. Excellent products are available for this purpose such as Juvederm Ultra® and Restylane® at a cost of approximately $450 to $550. For deeper filling we can use Juvederm Ultra Plus® and Radiesse®. You can be assured that seldom is it recommended to create exaggerated, Hollywood, balloon-sized lips. Instead, the result we desire is the look of health and vitality; the woman treated in this way with truly feel restored.
A final thought when assessing Vertical Lip Lines is the woman’s hormonal status. “Why am I growing old so fast?” Estrogen is the hormone that keeps your skin smooth and lips plump, and natural Estrogen replacement may be the solution. According to Dr. Thierry Hertoghe of Belgium, President of the World Society of Anti-Aging Medicine, when he sees a woman with Vertical Lip Lines, Estrogen Replacement is the treatment of choice. Natural Estrogen that is, properly balanced to the other essential hormones.
We start with a few simple questions such as “Are you experiencing Hot Flashes? Are you moody and irritable, or depressed? Do you have trouble sleeping? Are you easily fatigued? Do you have vaginal dryness and a loss of sexual interest?”
At Suite1A, we are happy to provide consultations regarding the troublesome symptoms of hormonal aging for men and women. We have Saliva Test Kits available for collection in the privacy of your own home for cost of $140. As stated by Neal Rouzier, MD, writer and expert on Hormone Replacement Therapy “Don’t fear Estrogen. Fear the Loss of Estrogen.” Unfortunately, complications resulting from the use of synthetic and conjugated hormone products have made our society fearful of the mention of “hormone replacement.”
The use of Natural Hormone Therapy is a matter of preservation of your health, your brain, your heart and your vitality. I am happy to discuss the science of this issue in small group evening seminars offered regularly in my Fall River office or in private consultations. Further information can be obtained from my website, www.Suite1A.net, or explore www.Labrix.com “Resources” for articles on these issues.
