I’ll Get Organized…Tomorrow

Home & Garden

By Karen Butler

Sound familiar?   You’re not alone.  So what’s preventing so many people from organizing their lives today instead of tomorrow?

All goals need an action plan and tools to support the goals.  Sounds easy, however, the success of a goal may require the assistance of others.  People seek professional expertise for many aspects of their lives however they often continue to struggle with organizational issues instead of working with a professional organizer.

It really is OK to ask for help!   Here are some of the concerns my clients had before they called me…

“I was afraid you would pressure me to get rid of things.”

Fear! Backing up the dumpster is not the answer to organizing your home and it is not unusual for people to want to feel that they are in control even when they know they are out of control!  Sounds a bit silly but it is so true.   My clients and I sort through their belongings using organizing techniques that make it easier for them to make the decisions with assistance from me, their “organizing coach”.

“I thought it would take forever to sort through the clutter!”

Organizing techniques move projects along.  Clients have told me that they have wasted many days and weekends working on organizing projects with poor results. They say that they get distracted by others and by the items buried in the piles of clutter.  It is my job to teach clients organizing principles and techniques and to keep them on track during our session.

“I was ready to give up but it feels great to see progress and I am inspired to do more!”

Who wants to commit to anything if there is little or no hope of getting results?  We rarely have the opportunity to complete a project in one sitting so committing to organizing sessions with an organizer and then working on a small piece for homework is extremely beneficial. Of course the process is flexible and sometimes homework is not an option.

“I’m an intelligent person and I thought I should be able to organize this room on my own.”

You may not be using organizing techniques or you simply may have time constraints or distractions.   Major life changes such as marriage, children and health issues will impact your ability to get through your “to do list”.  It has nothing to do with your I.Q. and hiring a professional organizer is a very effective use of your time.

“I was embarrassed and thought you were going to tell me that you had never seen such a mess.”

I look at every client’s situation as an opportunity for meaningful change not as an opportunity to judge.  It is a waste of our energy to compare ourselves to others and the focus is always on how I can make a difference in my client’s life.

We all need some assistance and the expertise of others to help us with life’s challenges and learning new organizing skills will allow you to make positive changes in your life.

“Out of clutter, find Simplicity. From discord, find Harmony.  In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” – Albert Einstein
