My Wish

Making A Difference

By Susan Cotta

Reflecting on our community, I realize how rich with diversity, love and compassion it is, despite what some media sources may say.
While it is true that it takes a ‘village’ to raise children – it also takes a community to band together in support of one another.

WE CAN CHANGE the world – one person at a time.  We ARE changing the world right now, but I feel the world could be even a better place and what better place to start than with ourselves!
My idea for this season is:  What if we each just reached out to one new person each day and did just one random act of kindness?  Even just saying hello can brighten someone’s day! Some of you have time to offer, a unique skill or even money.

I remember the year I had a friend who was a single mom and having difficulty figuring out how she was going to manage getting a gift for her son at the holidays.  I went shopping and got some toys for her son and gift certificates for food and clothes. I wrapped everything up and put it in a big bag and went to her house, left it on the front porch, rang the bell and ran away.  That was the best Christmas for me!  What a great feeling!  I was the only one that knew.  It was great to see her son so ecstatic and her talking about “the kindness of a complete stranger”.

One year, I sent money in an envelope to people I knew needed it – no return address and I used my left hand to write the address so they wouldn’t know who it was from.  It created quite a buzz.

If you can’t figure out what to do, charitable organizations, now more than ever need your help and you could either offer to volunteer or support them by sending money.  They will give you some ideas.

Of course your random act of kindness does not need to include any money expenditure - shovel some steps, offer a ride to someone, help someone cross the street, offer to pick up some groceries or offer to help at a soup kitchen.  Make your neighborhood a bit better place to live in.  These little acts do make a difference.  Imagine how that would change your home or neighborhood!

My wish for this season is that our community shows the world how it is done through our generosity coming from our heart. One person – one day at a time – let’s really change this world!
