Frozen Pipes, Water Damage, Now What?

Home & Garden

By Gary Jordan

Ah, the beauty of winter!  The falling snow, the joy of building a snowman. The freezing temperatures.  Power outages.  Frozen pipes which burst and leave homeowners with flooded basements and soaked carpets.

The winter season can be a nightmare if you don’t know how to deal with the trauma of water damage.  To keep your home safe from burst pipes due to freezing, wrap exposed pipes with UL listed heat tape if pipes are in an unheated area. Caulk cracks in the foundation and secure or insulate unheated crawl space openings.

Set your home heating system to at least 55 degrees if you are leaving for a prolonged amount of time.  If pipes do freeze, call a licensed plumber for safe methods to thaw your pipes.
