All Geared Up

Arts & Leisure

By Matt Bodziony

Believe it or not, the warmer weather is just around the corner, and you don’t want to be left out in the cold because your bike and gear aren’t ready.  So, even if you’re not thinking about riding your bike right now, this is a great time to get a spring tune up and take care of any issues that may have arisen last season.

It’s just sitting there anyway, why not have it serviced?  After a full season of riding, your bike could use a good once over.  You can drop it off at your local bike shop for a free estimate and in a few days you’ll have it back with any adjustments it needed, the tires inflated, the gears lubed, and any “bugs” worked out of it for you.  Your bike will be ready to hit the road, trail or bike path as soon as you are!

Now that you’ve taken care of your bicycle, you should give your other gear a once over as well.  Jot down anything that may be worn or needs to be replaced.  Then give some thought to gear and accessories that will make riding more enjoyable for you.  When talking with the staff at your local shop, let them know the kind of riding you’re looking forward to this season and then they can help you find the right gear for you.

It’s also a great time to check out what’s new for cycling this year.  With more and more people riding bikes again, the bicycle and accessory manufacturers have broadened their offerings to cover a wide variety of needs.  This means more choices in style and color on new bike models and a larger range of accessories for your existing bike, like racks and baskets, fenders, GPS systems, and even coffee cup holders!

Now is the perfect time to take a peek at your local shop’s website and see what’s going on near you.  At this time of the year, all the dates and schedules are being set for events, such as rides to benefit charities, group rides, training races and competitive races.
The local calendar is full of great cycling events that you can pick and choose from, whether you want to participate or spectate.  You might even find an educational clinic or two being offered at the shop.  Clinics are usually taught by industry professionals ranging from experienced mechanics to manufacturer representatives on a variety of topics such as changing a flat or the proper fitting of your bicycle.  Attending one of these clinics is sure to enhance your riding experience.

You know that once the milder weather arrives, you’ll be “all geared up” for some riding.  So take the time now to prepare and you’ll be ready to “ride for the fun of it!” this season.
