Look Closer: Jordan Hospital Breast Center Delivers Advanced Digital Imaging and Care

Women living on the South Shore and Cape Cod no longer have to battle hours of traffic to find top-quality breast health care. Armed with state-of-the-art technology and a comprehensive, multidisciplinary team of breast health specialists, Jordan Hospital opens a new Breast Center in October.

“The new Breast Health Center represents a concerted effort across medical, radiological and surgical disciplines at Jordan Hospital to provide the highest-quality breast health care, with excellent outcomes, to patients living in our community,” says Dominic Zazzarino, MD, FACS, who has been championing the project for the past several years.

For patients coming in for a regular screening, the Jordan Hospital Breast Center provides a convenient “one-stop” resource in a new and cheerful facility with easy parking and access to the latest digital imaging tools. For women with abnormalities, the new center’s goal is to provide a fast, comprehensive diagnosis—to help with what Dr. Zazzarino calls the “psychological emergency” of breast health. That is, that the waiting and concern about results can be as trying as the medical aspects. The Breast Center team has established measurable benchmarks and outcomes to match some of the world’s top breast centers. Women can be seen within 24 to 48 hours of the detection of a lump or an abnormal mammogram report that requires further intervention.

“Our advanced technology and multidisciplinary approach will allow us to streamline the process from the time a patient enters our system and an abnormality is detected. Our goal is to have most tissue diagnoses within five business days.  The only slight delay would be for special studies, such as immunochemistry, to increase the accuracy and specificity of the diagnosis,” explains Dr. Zazzarino.

Breast cancer survivor, Tamara Lifrieri says the new facility and its advanced technology make Jordan Hospital—already a great option for cancer treatment—even better. Ms. Lifrieri, 39, credits Dr. Zazzarino with “saving her life” after he persisted in analyzing the lump she discovered in her breast last year. While initial scans suggested a benign tumor, Dr. Zazzarino wasn’t convinced. Ultimately, the lump proved cancerous. Now after two lumpectomies, a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery, all performed at Jordan Hospital, Ms. Lifrieri is finished with her treatments.

She looks forward to visiting the new center for her annual check-ups, confident that she is getting the best care possible.
