I Want to Try Acupuncture but I’m Afraid of Needles!

Health & Wellness

By Leslie Murphy, Lic.Ac., Dipl.Ac.

Are you interested in an effective, natural, holistic form of medicine but your fear of needles is holding you back from trying acupuncture? Let me calm your fears by sharing what many patients have been surprised to find out—acupuncture is quite painless and rather enjoyable!

Acupuncture vs. Hypodermic Needles: The Difference

Patients who have had their blood drawn or received a flu shot from hypodermic needles are sometimes fearful that acupuncture will be just as painful as these procedures. A needle is a needle, right? Wrong! Hypodermic needles are stiff, thick and hollow because they pull blood out or force liquid into the body. Acupuncture needles, however, are fine, thin and flexible, often no thicker than a human hair. They are inserted just under the skin to re-establish healthy flow of energy in the body. Most acupuncture patients are surprised to discover that when inserted, the needles produce little or no sensation and that treatments are quite relaxing. Patients even fall asleep during treatment.

Acupuncture is a holistic medical system so it can be used to treat a wide range of physical and emotional conditions including: allergies and asthma, arthritis, anxiety and depression, back and neck pain, chronic fatigue, digestive issues, fibromyalgia, headaches/migraines, sciatica and many others.

What if I’m Still Hesitant?

I offer every new patient a free consultation during which you can see what a needle looks and feels like and determine if acupuncture is right for you. If you’re still uneasy about needles, there are several non-invasive techniques available that do not require needles. These include acupressure, magnets, moxibustion, cupping, tuina massage or Tong Ren therapy. Don’t let the fear of needles keep you from feeling your best!
