Injured Vehicle? Let Me Dispel A Few Myths…

Home & Garden

By Heather O’Brien

Too many drivers give little thought about what should happen after they get into an accident. The irony is that we would all know what to do if a loved one was injured at home - which hospital is closest or best, what emergency numbers to call, which doctor to notify. We’re not equating a loved one with a vehicle, but the “chariot” you ride to work is important nonetheless. You’re a professional - you can’t be without your wheels.

The information that follows should assist you in treating an injured vehicle.

Remember, vehicles can be fixed or replaced. That should comfort you in a stressful situation. Remaining calm will help you make rational decisions.

Call police to report the accident. Take pictures if applicable. Get contact information from stopped witnesses. Position yourself safely in regards to ongoing traffic. Map out the scene for the accident report. Obtain any other driver’s license, registration, and insurance information. If the driver is unapproachable, wait for police.

Call an expert to take responsibility for repairing your vehicle. The expert will arrange for towing and rentals, and will advocate for you with your insurance company. You may tow your vehicle directly to the collision repair shop of your choice. The insurance companies cannot require you to go to a particular shop. Avoid having the vehicle towed to a temporary lot – you’ll be charged for storage fees and the repair shop tow, and will NOT have an advocate with the insurance adjuster.

Realize there is no law dictating that you obtain multiple estimates. If you do obtain multiple estimates, differences are common. A lower estimate may not include all necessary work. Let us explain any discrepancies.

Choose a collision center that has uni-body repair equipment and certified (I-CAR or ASE) technicians.

Check if the collision center will be using genuine manufacturer (OEM) replacement parts. Inquire about any “Green Initiatives” employed. Ask about any repair warranties offered.

Plan and choose wisely. We are often woefully unprepared when it comes to collision and repair knowledge. Let’s do our part to reverse that trend!
