What Sets Acupuncture Apart From Other Therapies?

Health & Wellness

By Leslie Murphy, Lic.Ac., Dipl.Ac.

Acupuncture is a safe, natural, drug-free form of medicine. It’s been practiced for over 2,000 years for these very reasons as well as the following key points that set it apart from other therapies.

Treating the Cause AND Symptoms

Using the body’s own healing abilities, acupuncture treats the root cause of your illness as well as its accompanying acute or chronic symptoms, leaving your body healthier and stronger.  Acupuncture is not a band-aid approach that merely masks your symptoms. It focuses on the cause of your illness so that symptoms will not return. Why hide a problem with medication when you can address its cause AND symptoms with acupuncture?

Holistic Focus

Acupuncture diagnosis and treatment take into account the functioning of the whole body because all physical and emotional symptoms are key to understanding the state of your health. No symptom is viewed in isolation. Because of its holistic nature, with each treatment, you will see changes not only in your main complaint but in other areas of your health as well. For example, I may learn from a woman who suffers from migraines that she also experiences painful periods, constipation, tight neck and shoulders and emotional stress.  All of these symptoms, according to traditional Chinese medicine, stem from the same cause. Therefore in treating the cause of her migraines, as they decrease in frequency and intensity, she’ll also notice improvements in her digestion, bowel movements, tension and stress level.

Preventive Care

We are starting to recognize in this country that we need to focus on preventive care rather than reactive care for our best health.  Acupuncture addresses imbalances in the body before they develop into serious problems. It also strengthens your immune system making you less susceptible to colds, flu, allergies and immune-compromising conditions. Taking care of yourself preventatively with acupuncture is also more cost-effective, saving you money in the long run.
