What to Get the Senior in Your Family

Health & Wellness

By Sailynn Doyle

The holiday season is almost here!  When you visit with mom or dad at Thanksgiving, you might notice a small decline or that they just need some extra help.  As you struggle to find the perfect gift for them this holiday season, why not try something new and “outside the box”.

A gift certificate for services from Home Instead Senior Care is the perfect thing this season.  It’s a gift that everyone can use, will fit anyone, and one you don’t have to wrap!  Here are a few scenarios you might recognize:

Ann lives by herself and has been struggling to cook a nutritious meal.  Her family noticed she has lost some weight and does not seem as interested in eating.  Her family decides to get her a gift certificate to Home Instead for a CAREGiver to come in once a week to help her with grocery shopping and to cook a few meals for the week and freeze them.  Ann now has someone visiting her consistently once per week, taking her out of the house to the grocery store, and engaging her in an activity she loved – cooking!

William lives with his wife who has Alzheimer’s disease.  He is the primary caregiver for her and lately has been declining himself due to stress and the added pressure of taking care of her.  She is now unable to be left alone at all.  His family decides to get him a gift certificate to Home Instead to provide him with some respite care.  William is now able to go to the local senior center and have lunch with his friends twice a week and he does not have to worry because a CAREGiver is with his wife during this time and engaging her in new activities.

Emma lives at an assisted living facility and does not have any family nearby.  Her children feel so guilty that they cannot visit her more often because it is too hard for them with their own family obligations.  The two children decide to jointly give their mom a gift certificate to Home Instead so she can have a CAREGiver take her out on the town.  The children now know their mom is getting out like she used to.  The CAREGiver brings her to visit her friends, takes her window shopping, and attends religious services with her.

Peter lives with his daughter, her husband and children.  He recently hurt his knee during a golf game and now needs minor surgery.  His daughter and her husband cannot take the time off from work and don’t know who is going to take him to the surgery and then care for him when he returns home.  So, the daughter gives Bob a gift certificate for Home Instead services for a short period of time while he recovers.  A CAREGiver escorts Bob to his surgery and then helps him settle in when he returns home.  The CAREGiver then comes by daily in the morning for the next few weeks to help him bathe, dress, and make him breakfast while the family is at work/school.  Bob feels safe recovering at home and enjoys the companionship of the CAREGiver!
