Southcoast Hospitals Top 5 Percent

Health & Wellness

By Southcoast Hospitals

Southcoast Hospitals has been ranked in the top 5 percent of hospitals in the U.S. in patient safety by HealthGrades, the country’s leading independent health care ratings organization.

Southcoast is one of just seven hospitals in Massachusetts and the only hospital on the South Coast to receive the prestigious HealthGrades Patient Safety Excellence Award for 2010. “Receiving this prestigious award proves that we are doing many of the things necessary to ensure that our patients receive safe, high quality care,” said Keith A. Hovan, President & CEO of Southcoast Hospitals Group.

Patients at hospitals in the top 5 percent experienced 43 percent fewer patient safety incidents, on average, compared to poorly performing hospitals, according to HealthGrades.  HealthGrades used patient safety indicators from the Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality (AHRQ) to identify the patient safety incidence rates for every non-federal hospital in the country using Medicare data gathered between 2006 and 2008. In addition to identifying the rates of patient safety events, HealthGrades created a composite score to identify the best-performing hospitals in the U.S. for that time period.
