Pruning is a horticultural art! It’s the learned technique of “selective removal of parts of a plant (tree, shrub, hedge, vine, rose, perennial, etc.)”. If you don’t know how to prune, your beautiful specimen can turn into a bad hair day. It may take years to grow out, or worse, not grow back at all. The “pruner” must know there are different pruning techniques with different pruning tools for different types of plants at different times of the year. One technique requires the removal process of a ? to ½. Another technique requires a drastic reduction depending on the species, size, age, site (soil, roots, shade, dry, etc.), time of year and type of customer. Drastic reduction is not for everyone because it could take 1-3 months for some plants and 3-6 months for others to grow back.
So, why prune? Here are some reasons: to promote health and/or aesthetics, to increase yield and quality of flowers/fruits, to reduce hazard and increase safety, to repair or prevent storm damage, to remove leggy/old wood/diseased/deadwood, to rid insect damage, to correct with structural pruning and shape to control direction of growth for design/architectural elements.
Tim Ramey, a certified horticulturalist and arborist, can help. Tim can teach you why to prune, how to prune, what to prune and when to prune, or do it for you. Spring is the best time to do most pruning, perennials divisions, insect management, and landscape design planning. Call Tim today for a property consultation.
