Annual or Perennial?

Home & Garden

By Tim Ramey

A Little Honest Guidance

A friend of mine told me a story of how she went to one of those big chain garden centers for flowers that “would last all the time.”  The helpful sales associate encouraged her to purchase over $200 worth of flowering plants and products.  By the first frost, all the plants had died.  She returned to the store to explain how she spent a lot of time and money on products that she thought would last according to what she had been told.  They explained that she had purchased all annuals. They would not refund any money.  She didn’t know what an annual was at that time, but she does now.

An annual is a plant, like marigolds or petunias, which is grown for flowers that last all season long but usually die in cold weather.  A perennial is a plant that should return year after year but only flowers for a short time, on average 1 to 3 weeks.  Examples are Bearded Iris and Black Eyed Susans.  Keep in mind, all plants are dependent upon the climate’s growing season, soil/light/water conditions, nutritional needs, and the care they receive.

My friend is an amateur gardener who wanted a nice yard but needed a little honest guidance.  When I asked her if she would spend $75 to have someone come to her house, walk her property with her for one hour, and discuss the property’s needs and dreams, she said, “In a heartbeat.”  Tim Ramey is a certified horticulturalist, arborist and landscape professional.  This is what he does.  This is what he’s good at.
