Vacation Help – We’re Here When You Need Us

Health & Wellness

By Sailynn Doyle

Are you enjoying the warm weather?  Summer in New England is the time of year when most of us take some much needed vacations to enjoy the beautiful area we call home.  With the downturn in the economy, many seniors moved in with their children or grandchildren over the past few years, so when vacation time arrives, how does a family plan for their trip when grandma or grandpa does not want to go or cannot go.  Home Instead Senior Care can help by sending a trained, bonded and insured CAREGiver to stay with your senior loved ones.

How far in advance should I book a CAREGiver?

Home Instead Senior Care is available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.  While you are planning your trip, make the scheduling of a CAREGiver another item on your vacation checklist.  We can assist you with your plans months, weeks or even days in advance for a smooth transition process.

My family member says they will be fine left alone and will enjoy the quiet.  Do you think this is true?

Seniors never want to seem like they are a burden on their family, so a lot of the time they will say, “It’s okay, I’ll be fine.” when they probably mean, “I will be fine, but a little lonely.”  Depression affects more than 6 million people aged 65 or older in the United States, so leaving your family member alone could cause more harm than you realize.  Tell them you are having someone stay with them to keep them company and it’s no trouble at all.  It will actually enable you to enjoy your vacation without having to worry about them while you are gone.

How do I know how much CAREGiver time is needed?

A professional member of the Home Instead Senior Care team will meet with you, at your convenience, to learn more about the needs of your family member.  They will then recommend a potential schedule for the time when you are away.

Could I receive updates while I am away?

Of course! Home Instead Senior Care is available by phone or email so you can check in whenever you would like.  Our Client Care Coordinator will visit the home to ensure your family member is happy with the CAREGiver and that the needed services are being completed.

Do you only provide services in a “home” environment?

Home Instead Senior Care provides CAREGivers wherever a senior may call home – a house, assisted living, nursing home etc.  For instance, if you visit your family member in a nursing home or assisted living on a regular basis, but will be out of town, we can have a CAREGiver provide them with companionship while you are away.

What services can a CAREGiver provide?

Home Instead CAREGivers can provide an array of services such as companionship, meal preparation, light housekeeping, medication reminders, shopping, errands, incidental transportation, bathing, grooming, toileting and don’t forget pet care!  Services are available 24 hours a day, so you can choose what services you want and when you want them.

Why should I hire an agency, rather than a family member or friend?

All of us have the best intentions when we volunteer our time to help out a friend or family member.  However, we all have our own very busy lives and sometimes our best intentions can be forgotten.  Instead of worrying about overburdening your friend with your family members needs, you can feel confident knowing that a professional agency will be there when they say they’re going to be.  At Home Instead Senior Care, if there is a sick call or emergency, we have a pool of trained CAREGivers who can respond quickly.
