Discover the Healing Power of CranioSacral Therapy

Health & Wellness

By Martha Tassinari, PT/Certified Craniosacral Therapist

Is This You?

Have you tried conventional physical therapy, medication or surgery without lasting results?  Have you had x-rays and MRI’s that have come back negative, but still have pain and no one can give you any answers?  You have tried everything, yet your doctor thinks that your pain is all in your head and wants to put you on anti-depressants.

If this sounds like you, take heart, you’re not alone.  There is hope!  If you are open and receptive to complementary ways of healing, ready to make your life a priority, and willing to do the work, CranioSacral Therapy may be the solution you’ve been looking for.

As a physical therapist for over 17 years, I have seen many patients frustrated and discouraged with the care they have received, along with the disappointment of the inability to overcome their pain and return to physical activity.
I understand your pain!  Having suffered from chronic back pain for many years, I searched for alternative methods of treatment, including CranioSacral Therapy.  This gentle therapy helped me to heal at many levels and allowed me to get back to the things I loved to do!

Back pain is one of the most common problems people have today.  About 60-80% of the adult U.S. population has lower back pain. It is the leading cause of visits to the doctor, hospitalization, work disability, and surgery.

Traditional healthcare has not been an effective form of therapy for chronic back pain and this is seen in the increasing number of people seeking alternative therapies.  The standard medical treatments consist of medication and surgery.  Surgery is certainly necessary and beneficial in many cases but there are alternatives you might consider before electing to undergo any surgical procedure.

The most important challenge people face is an accurate diagnosis.  The majority of conventional medicine and therapy consists of treating the symptoms and not the root cause of the problem.

For example, if you are experiencing shoulder pain, a typical therapist will treat your shoulder. If you are experiencing headaches your therapist may treat your neck.  These areas of pain most likely are not the root cause of your problem.  I have seen many people who suffer from migraines and headaches with the root cause of the problem originating at the sacrum (lower back region). Likewise, people experiencing shoulder pain often have a problem originating from a rotated pelvis or postural deficits.

Many times people may experience pain in one area of the body but the root cause of the problem may be in a completely different location.

Craniosacral Therapy Helps To Identify the Source of Your Pain

It is important to identify the root cause of the problem.  You need more than just symptom relief.  If only the symptoms of your pain are addressed, your therapy will be less effective and you may experience further dysfunction in other parts of your body and just feel temporary relief.

CranioSacral Therapy is considered a light touch therapy that releases tensions in the central nervous system which affects all other systems in the body.  This is the key component with this type of healing method.  By addressing the central nervous system, this form of therapy is able to release tensions deep within the body which help relieve pain and restrictions, and improves whole-body health and performance.

Craniosacral Therapy Effectively Treats Back Pain by Utilizing a “Total Body Approach” To Healing:

It is common that over time, imbalances in one body part may create an imbalance in another.   For example, maybe one side of your pelvis is higher than the other which may be causing an elevated shoulder which in turn may be feeding into postural changes in your neck and causing headaches.  For this reason, therapy should integrate a rebalancing of your spine and fascia (connective tissue).

In addition to the physical component, it is also important to address the emotional factor.  Both physical and emotional trauma can affect our ability to heal and for total body healing to occur it is important to address the mind/body connection. The CranioSacral therapist treats you as a whole person and takes you through each step of the healing process. It is part of my treatment approach to teach stress management and relaxation techniques.
