How many times have we forgotten where we parked the car, or put our keys or forgotten an appointment? Well, if you think you have trouble remembering, think how it might be when you get older because as you age, memory is one of the things that start to diminish. We would like to help our aging parents or our patients sharpen their memory. Although there are no sure fire ways to improve memory, there are a few tricks or tips we can use to help.
Maintain a routine, eat meals at the same time every day, take medications at the same time every day. Consistency is a good way to help the elderly remember things. Don’t confuse your elders by changing the way things are done.
Put things in the same place all the time. For example, have a place to put keys, put the calendar in the same spot each month and keep things organized. Write down tasks, appointments and events on the calendar or in a book. Check off items as you complete them.
Try to get the elderly interested in exercise for both mind and body. Avoid too much sodium. Keep the elderly mentally active by doing crossword puzzles or other mind games.
Socialize with family and friends or sign up for community activities -- it wards off stress and depression. Interaction with other people stimulates the mind and keeps it engaged through conversation, dancing, singing or other activities.
Remember, keeping active in both mind and body is the key!
