What’s New at All Ears in 2012?

We constantly learn, so that we are better educators. In January 2012, Dr. Deborah Dempesy had the honor of being invited to participate in an International Audiology conference in Copenhagen, Denmark. The conference focused on Aural Rehabilitation—the science of understanding how our brains “hear” when our hearing is normal and when we have hearing loss. Dr. Dempesy is extremely pleased to bring this knowledge back with her to All Ears to continue to provide excellent, caring service.
In October 2011, Eileen Roussos, Audiology Assistant and Office Manager attended the Academy of Doctors of Audiology Conference in Bonita Springs, Florida, where she acquired new administrative skills which she incorporates into her work at All Ears.
In March 2012, all staff at All Ears Hearing Center will be attending the International Audiology Now convention in Boston! Twelve thousand of our audiology colleagues gather together for the exchange of ideas and educational experiences.
We Are Growing
We were thrilled to welcome Dr. Janice Tanedo Powis, Doctor of Audiology, to our professional staff in February, 2012. Dr. Powis specializes in diagnostics and hearing device technology. A fellow of the American Academy of Audiology and a Board Member of the Massachusetts Academy of Audiology, Dr. Powis completed her fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston after earning her Doctorate of Audiology from the University of Memphis. She holds her Certificate of Clinical Competence through the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association and is licensed by the state of Massachusetts to practice audiology. Dr. Powis brings an impressive set of skills to All Ears: she is intelligent, clinically experienced, compassionate, and gentle.
We continue to maintain state-of-the-art technology. All Ears Hearing has incorporated new technology to help us assess how successful your programmed hearing devices are going to operate in your “real world” environment.
These Newer Technologies Include:
Quick Sin (QSIN): an objective speech in noise assessment that enables us to determine a person’s ability to understand speech (sentences) in quiet and in increasingly louder levels of background noise. This helps us predict the appropriateness of the programming of your hearing aids and helps us predict your ability to hear in your environment.
Acceptable Noise Levels (ANL): a subjective speech in noise assessment that enables us to determine a person’s ability to “tolerate” background noise. This helps us determine the most appropriate type of hearing device circuitry that will maximize your success with hearing devices.
Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs): a means to assess inner ear health and integrity. OAEs can detect and monitor early onset of hearing loss due to ototoxic medications, noise exposure or certain neurologic diseases such as Lyme’s disease.
Real Ear Measures (REM): an objective demonstration (through the use of a miniature microphone in the ear canal) to the patient and audiologist of exactly what is perceived by the ear at the eardrum. REM assists in the initial fitting and troubleshooting of hearing instruments.

Dr. Deborah Dempesy
Dr. Dempesy obtained her Masters in Audiology at Northwestern University in Evanston IL in 1982. She received her Doctorate in Audiology at the Salus University (previously known as The Pennsylvania College of Optometry and Audiology) in Pennsylvania in 2007. Dr. Dempesy worked with developmentally delayed hearing-impaired children in the Chicago area for two years from 1980-1982, moved back to her home state of Massachusetts and was Clinical Director of Audiology at Boston’s Beth Israel Hospital for 14 years. She consulted, performing research with manufacturers of hearing devices and volunteered on the Massachusetts Infant Hearing Screening Task Force until a law was passed that required all infants to have their hearing screened before discharge from the hospital or birthing clinic.
Dr. Dempesy has been a board member of the Massachusetts Academy of Audiology, volunteering her time to continue quality education of audiologists in the Massachusetts area.
Recently Dr. Dempesy worked for a major hearing device manufacturer, providing training and education on new technology to audiologists in the New England area. The combination of these experiences gives her an exceptionally well-rounded perspective that she passes on to her patients.
In addition, Dr. Dempesy is a member of the American Academy of Audiology, The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the American Tinnitus Association, Educational Audiology Association and the Aural Rehabilitation Association. She is licensed to practice as an audiologist in the state of Massachusetts.
Personally, Dr. Dempesy’s immediate family consists of her partner and 23 year old daughter. In her free time, Dr. Dempesy loves to ocean kayak, run, rock climb, hike, read, watch movies and spend time with her sisters, brother and parents in western Massachusetts.
