Large or small firm?
There are different advantages and disadvantages to choosing an attorney from either a large firm or a small firm. Generally speaking, for instance, you can expect to pay more with a large firm, but a large firm may offer more lawyers with a wide range of specialized expertise you will need as your business grows. Conversely, a smaller firm may be more responsive, more accessible and provide a more personal touch to you and your business. Most business owners find they need something in between.
Go with your instincts.
In the end, you will need to select a lawyer you think you can both trust and work with on a regular basis. It is not advisable to assume that the lawyer who handled the closing on your home or your divorce has the expertise to handle your business matters. Your goal is to evaluate the attorney and try to determine if he or she has the ability (and willingness) to think strategically, communicates clearly both verbally and in writing, and is intelligent, experienced, reliable, attentive to detail, polite and honest.
These types of questions can help to ensure that you find a lawyer with the expertise and client-relations skills that are essential to properly protecting you and your business.
