Osteoporosis - what every woman should know
• Early detection can help to prevent further bone deterioration.
• The National Osteoporosis Foundation estimates that osteoporosis will affect one in every three women and one in every five men.
• After age 50, a woman’s risk of developing osteoporosis doubles every five years.
THE GOOD NEWS
Research in osteoporosis (progressive bone loss) is making important new advances. Success is due to the new equipment known as bone densitometers which measure bone loss more accurately than conventional x-ray. X-ray tests often did not reveal a potential problem until the patient had lost 25% to 30% of bone density. Our physicians can now measure bone density more accurately than before and this information will help your doctor decide the best course of action for your bone health.
Bone Densitometry (or DEXA) is recognized by the National Osteoporosis Foundation as the most accurate bone density technique and is available at our Cranston, Johnston, Wakefield and Middletown Imaging Centers.
Your best insurance against bone loss is to speak with your doctor about osteoporosis if you are over 50, sedentary, have risk factors such as long term use of steroids or thyroid medication or are postmenopausal.
