Thirty years ago, not many people had heard of Alzheimer’s disease. Sadly, today, it is difficult to find someone whose life has not been touched by it. Current trends indicate that fifty per cent of the people who live to be 85 years or older will develop Alzheimer’s or some other form
of dementia.
Presently, Alzheimer’s disease costs the economy 110 billion dollars per year, the most expensive of any disease. With an aging society, the financial burden of caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s will cripple our health care system and burden families.

Body Image and Food, Confusing Messages
Being painfully thin is portrayed as the ideal for women in our culture. Just open one of the many fashion magazines and look at the models who adorn their pages. The average model is 5’11” tall and weighs 117 pounds. Models are expected to maintain zero body fat which, by the way, is inhuman. Women’s bodies are not designed to operate with zero body fat.

Have you been feeling a little sensitive lately?
Winter can do that to you. This season is nature’s time for quiet and rest. And so, this season lends itself as a time when you may find yourself doing some self-reflection. December 21st is the winter solstice, the first day of winter, the shortest day and longest night of the year. The cold and icy days of winter also provide us with the perfect opportunity to spend more time at home with family and friends.

Say it isn’t so. Today, more than two thirds of adults and one third of children in our country are obese or overweight. Researchers have concluded that by 2015, eight short years from now, three fourths of adults and over forty per cent of children will be overweight or obese. Unfortunately, being overweight or obese puts us at risk for serious health problems including diabetes, heart disease and cancer. For the first time in history, the current generation of children may die at a younger age than their parents.
